How this calculator works
Shares bought is investment ÷ price. The dividend per share per payment is
price × yield ÷ 100 ÷ payments per year (4 for CM). For every payment the
calculator pays shares × dividend per share; with DRIP on it buys
payment ÷ current price more shares, and any annual contribution is split evenly across
the year's payments and also buys shares. The growth assumptions are converted to a per-payment rate so
that they compound to the annual figure you enter. Break-even is the first month at which the
dividends received so far reach 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the capital contributed to that point,
simulated out to 50 years. Yield on cost is the year's dividends divided by total capital contributed.
FAQ
- How much does CM pay per share?
- As of 15 September 2026 the reference figures from StockAnalysis were a 2.72% trailing-twelve-month yield at a share price of $113.35, which works out to about $3.08 per share a year, paid quarterly (roughly $0.77 per quarter). The board sets each dividend, so check the issuer's latest declaration before relying on it.
- How many CM shares would it take to earn $1,000 a month?
- At the reference yield of 2.72% you would need about 3,892 shares, roughly $441,176 at $113.35 a share, to receive $12,000 a year. Set the initial investment to that amount in the calculator to see the projection. A higher yield needs fewer shares; a lower yield needs more.
- What does the DRIP toggle change?
- With DRIP on, each dividend buys more CM shares at the then-current price, so the next payment is slightly larger; the projection compounds 4 times a year. With DRIP off the dividends are counted as cash income and the share count only changes through your annual contributions.
- Is the CM yield in the calculator the forward or trailing yield?
- The prefilled figure is the trailing-twelve-month yield reported by StockAnalysis: the last twelve months of dividends divided by the price on 15 September 2026. If Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce has announced a dividend change since then, the forward yield will differ; replace the yield with (latest quarterly dividend × 4) ÷ price to use the forward figure.
