About SCHD
SCHD is the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF, which tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index. The index screens for companies with at least ten consecutive years of dividend payments and ranks them on cash flow to debt, return on equity, dividend yield and five-year dividend growth. Distributions are paid quarterly.

How this calculator works
Shares bought is investment ÷ price. The dividend per share per payment is
price × yield ÷ 100 ÷ payments per year (4 for SCHD). For every payment the
calculator pays shares × dividend per share; with DRIP on it buys
payment ÷ current price more shares, and any annual contribution is split evenly across
the year's payments and also buys shares. The growth assumptions are converted to a per-payment rate so
that they compound to the annual figure you enter. Break-even is the first month at which the
dividends received so far reach 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the capital contributed to that point,
simulated out to 50 years. Yield on cost is the year's dividends divided by total capital contributed.
FAQ
- How much does SCHD pay per share?
- As of 15 September 2026 the reference figures from StockAnalysis were a 3.05% trailing-twelve-month yield at a share price of $34.33, which works out to about $1.05 per share a year, paid quarterly (roughly $0.26 per quarter). ETF distributions change with the income of the underlying holdings, so check the issuer's latest declaration before relying on it.
- How many SCHD shares would it take to earn $1,000 a month?
- At the reference yield of 3.05% you would need about 11,461 shares, roughly $393,443 at $34.33 a share, to receive $12,000 a year. Set the initial investment to that amount in the calculator to see the projection. A higher yield needs fewer shares; a lower yield needs more.
- What does the DRIP toggle change?
- With DRIP on, each distribution buys more SCHD shares at the then-current price, so the next payment is slightly larger; the projection compounds 4 times a year. With DRIP off the distributions are counted as cash income and the share count only changes through your annual contributions.
- Does the calculator account for SCHD's 0.06% expense ratio?
- Not separately. SCHD's expense ratio of 0.06% is deducted inside the fund before distributions are paid, so a yield based on actual distributions is already net of it. The price-growth assumption is your own; if you model total return, remember the expense ratio is a drag on it.
