How this calculator works

Shares bought is investment ÷ price. The dividend per share per payment is price × yield ÷ 100 ÷ payments per year (12 for SDIV). For every payment the calculator pays shares × dividend per share; with DRIP on it buys payment ÷ current price more shares, and any annual contribution is split evenly across the year's payments and also buys shares. The growth assumptions are converted to a per-payment rate so that they compound to the annual figure you enter. Break-even is the first month at which the dividends received so far reach 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the capital contributed to that point, simulated out to 50 years. Yield on cost is the year's dividends divided by total capital contributed.

FAQ

How much does SDIV pay per share?
As of 15 September 2026 the reference figures from StockAnalysis were a 9.11% trailing-twelve-month yield at a share price of $24.55, which works out to about $2.24 per share a year, paid monthly (roughly $0.19 per month). ETF distributions change with the income of the underlying holdings, so check the issuer's latest declaration before relying on it.
How many SDIV shares would it take to earn $1,000 a month?
At the reference yield of 9.11% you would need about 5,366 shares, roughly $131,723 at $24.55 a share, to receive $12,000 a year. Set the initial investment to that amount in the calculator to see the projection. A higher yield needs fewer shares; a lower yield needs more.
What does the DRIP toggle change?
With DRIP on, each distribution buys more SDIV shares at the then-current price, so the next payment is slightly larger; the projection compounds 12 times a year. With DRIP off the distributions are counted as cash income and the share count only changes through your annual contributions.
Does the calculator account for SDIV's 0.58% expense ratio?
Not separately. SDIV's expense ratio of 0.58% is deducted inside the fund before distributions are paid, so a yield based on actual distributions is already net of it. The price-growth assumption is your own; if you model total return, remember the expense ratio is a drag on it.

Not financial advice. Reference figures as of 2026-09-15 from StockAnalysis; yields and prices change daily and dividends can be cut. Projections are arithmetic on your assumptions, not forecasts.
