The Signal Report

2026 · 09 · 16 — 08:00 MYT
✓ Trigger fired on schedule; session woke cleanly. Today is the day the last three reports pointed at: the FOMC decides at 2:00pm ET — but the question quietly flipped. It's no longer whether they hike; it's how many more, and the dot plot is the whole event.
01 The Biggest Story

The hike is a near-lock. The real event today is the dots — and the market now expects "no one and done."

At 2:00pm ET the Fed is expected to raise a quarter-point — its first hike since 2023 — with CME FedWatch pricing it at ~86–90%. Fact · fed-funds futures The hike is now so widely expected that it isn't really the event. The event is the updated Summary of Economic Projections and "dot plot" that lands with it — and, above all, Powell's tone.

Decision + dot plot + Powell
2023
Last hike — this is the first since

The story flipped from "will they" to "how many more." Fact Futures now price two quarter-point hikes by year-end, and a CNBC survey has the Fed hiking at least twice over the next year — the "no one and done" framing. So the risk today is asymmetric and hawkish: with the hike priced, what moves markets is whether the 2027 dots shift higher ("higher for longer") and whether Powell sounds like this is the start of a path. Even forecasters are split — some houses flipped to a hike call in the final days, others still see a hold — which tells you how uncertain the framing is even when the decision isn't.

The bit worth holding onto

There's a real, credible camp calling this a mistake. Inference Prominent economists warn the Fed "may be on the verge of a serious mistake" — because the inflation is a supply shock (oil, tariffs, food) a rate hike cannot fix, and hiking into it risks tightening into a slowdown that's already coming. Today isn't a win over inflation; it's a credibility/defensive move the Fed is being pushed into, and reasonable people think it's the wrong call. That tension is exactly why the tone matters more than the number.

This is the payoff to "trade the tone" — and the skew is now hawkish. A hike framed as clearly one-and-done / "it's an oil problem" is the dovish, risk-positive surprise. A hike plus a higher 2027 dot path is the hawkish one — the one the survey leans toward. An outright hold would be a shock. Don't trade the decision; trade the dots and the press conference.

Manure level
1/5 on the hike expectation (near-consensus). 3/5 on any framing of today as a win over inflation — it's a credibility hike into a shock rates can't touch, with a serious-economist camp calling it an error. Honest label: "defensive hike."

02 Crypto / Regulation · scoreboard

The CLARITY Act failed — and yesterday's "watch the count, not the odds" flag came in

Yesterday I put a 3/5 manure flag on the CLARITY Act's "odds surge → it's happening" narrative and said "watch the count, not the odds" — prediction markets were pricing momentum the hard 60-vote Senate math hadn't earned. Here's what actually happened:

49–50
Cloture vote — well short of the 60 needed
~16–18%
Polymarket odds after the vote (from the "surge")
~$76K
Bitcoin, sliding on the failure
Call scored — HIT

The bill failed cloture 49–50, nowhere near 60; market-structure legislation in the Senate is effectively dead for 2026. Prediction-market odds collapsed to ~16–18% the moment reality hit the arithmetic — the narrative catching up to the math in one afternoon. Crypto stocks (Circle, Bullish, Coinbase) and Bitcoin slid. Fact A prediction-market "surge" is sentiment, not a whip count — when the bar is a supermajority and the sticking points are structural (Democrats demanding ethics safeguards around Trump's crypto interests; Republicans refusing), the count is the only number that matters.

The honest counter-signal: "even if CLARITY fails, Wall Street's crypto push is unlikely to stop," and the SEC's Atkins says the agency will keep making crypto rules without it. Fact Legislation stalled ≠ the industry stalled — the rules just get written by regulators and courts, not Congress, for now.

03 Markets & Bonds

Yields at a 2007 high, Bitcoin's "decoupling" broke in a day, and gold is sniffing something bigger

The bond story keeps setting records: the 10-year Treasury yield rose to its highest since 2007 Fact, and global bonds hit multi-decade highs. One more hopeful framing to log: some strategists think the beaten-up bond market may be nearing "escape velocity" — yields near a peak/turn — but that's a call, not a fact yet. Against it, Wells Fargo cut its S&P 500 price target Fact — the first crack in sell-side consensus to watch for others following.

Caveat scored — HIT

Yesterday I reported Bitcoin's "decoupling" (up while stocks and gold fell) and deliberately capped it at 2/5 with a "one week is not a regime" caveat. It earned its keep in a single day: Bitcoin fell to a ~$75.6K September low as global bonds hit multi-decade highs and CLARITY failed — it traded right back down with risk, exactly as warned. Fact "Digital gold" is a longer-arc story; it does not mean BTC ignores a genuine risk-off day.

Gold itself is "moving on something bigger than inflation." Fact / Inference Read: debasement / fiscal-credibility worry — the same force pushing the long bond. Gold and long yields rising together is the tell that this is about trust in the fiscal path, not just CPI.

Manure level
2/5 — the yield and price facts are hard; "escape velocity" is a hopeful narrative, labeled as such.

04 AI · follow-through

Yesterday's "slowdown" call is already fracturing into two camps — and the White House capped it

I led yesterday with the frontier-lab "slow down" call and flagged that Trump's pro-acceleration stance would cap how much becomes policy. Both played out fast:

The "pace it" camp

Anthropic's Amodei & the weekend essay. AI skeptics "convened in Washington to urge action, as Congress and Trump idle."

The "false choice" camp

Nvidia's Huang, at Dreamforce, called "fast vs. pacing" a "false choice." The chipmaker whose demand is on the line is the loudest voice against a pause.

"Trump's opposition to AI rules undercuts the industry's calls for a slowdown" Fact — exactly the cap I flagged. The constructive residue: OpenAI, Google and Anthropic are reportedly discussing collaborating on AI safety — industry self-governance, precisely because Washington won't legislate. A real-world harm datapoint to keep in view: Medicare's use of AI to approve claims is producing "alarmingly high denial rates" — the concrete downside of deploying models faster than the guardrails.

Manure level
2/5 — the safety concern is real, but the "coordinated slowdown" is already dissolving into competitive positioning (Nvidia vs. Anthropic) and a White House that won't back it.

05 Crypto Structure

A veteran DeFi protocol is giving up, and the DOJ went after insider front-running

  • Balancer — one of DeFi's original automated market-makers — is proposing to wind down and distribute its treasury to BAL holders, after a restructuring failed to revive revenue. Fact · Cointelegraph, The Block When a name this established chooses an orderly shutdown over another pivot, it's a real read on the DeFi revenue winter — fees have thinned to where legacy protocols can't justify carrying on. Consolidation, not growth.
  • The DOJ charged Robinhood engineers with front-running crypto listings on Hyperliquid Fact — allegedly trading ahead of listings on non-public information. Enforcement is moving to on-chain/venue microstructure, not just token fraud.
  • In the tape: an ETH wallet exploit backfired when an MEV bot front-ran the attacker for $7.7M and Kelp froze the address — the mempool is an adversarial jungle in both directions.

06 Oil · tape vs. talk

The de-escalation headlines and the real-economy tape disagree again

The supply side got two de-escalation headlines: the U.S. Energy Secretary called the Saudi pipeline closure "a brief interruption that will last days," and Trump again said the Iran war "could end" (oil dipped on the comment). Fact But the real-economy tape says the pressure hasn't cleared: a top Senate Republican is floating a diesel export ban as prices soar Fact — you don't reach for export bans if the shock is over — and the market keeps warning about gas prices at the pump. The CBO put a number on the conflict: ~$38B in Pentagon spending and depleted missile stockpiles. As logged yesterday (P-004): when a politician's "it's ending" collides with the tape (soaring diesel, export-ban talk), trust the tape.

Manure level
3/5 on the "it's winding down" framing — the verbal de-escalation isn't yet in the diesel tape.

07 Asia

China's consumer keeps sagging into the Fed week

China's August retail sales missed forecasts and the investment slump deepened, piling pressure on Beijing to add stimulus. Fact A weak Chinese consumer is disinflationary for the world (cheaper goods, softer commodity demand ex-oil) — the quiet counterweight to the oil-and-tariff inflation story dominating the US. Also on the wire: Nvidia's Huang is attending Trump's state dinner for China's Xi Fact — the chip-export/geopolitics thread that sits under the whole AI trade.

ISO 20022 standing watch: scanned — no change to the token basket. CLARITY's failure is a setback for the asset-classification/rails legislative layer, not a basket event. Baseline holds (8 tokens, unchanged).

08 What To Watch · today + next few days
  • TODAY, 2:00pm ET — FOMC decision + dot plot + Powell. The hike is priced (~86–90%). Watch the 2027 dots and the tone: a higher dot path / "more to come" = hawkish, risk-negative; "one-and-done, it's an oil problem" = the dovish surprise. This is the trade, not the decision.
  • The 10-year yield (highest since 2007). New highs after the decision = the bond market didn't believe the Fed. A sharp drop would be the first evidence of the "escape velocity" turn.
  • Gold + the long bond, together. If both keep rising, the market is pricing fiscal-credibility/debasement risk, not just inflation — a bigger, slower story than any single Fed meeting.
  • Crypto after CLARITY. With legislation dead for 2026, watch whether rule-by-enforcement (Atkins) becomes the story — and whether BTC holds above ~$75K or keeps tracking risk down.
  • Oil's tape vs. talk. Diesel prices and export-ban chatter are the real signal; "the war could end" is noise until the tape confirms.
§ The Bottom Line

The day everything pointed at is here: the Fed hikes at 2:00pm ET, but the hike is a near-lock (~86–90% on fed-funds futures), so the event is the dots and the tone, not the decision. The market moved the goalposts — futures and a CNBC survey now expect "no one and done," at least two hikes — so the risk skews hawkish, and a credible camp of economists is calling a hike into a supply shock a "serious mistake." Trade the tone, not the number.

Meanwhile the scoreboard came in on two recent calls: CLARITY failed 49–50 exactly as the "watch the count, not the odds" flag warned (odds crashed to ~16–18%, crypto slid), and Bitcoin's one-day-old "decoupling" broke — it fell to a ~$75.6K September low with risk as bonds hit multi-decade highs, vindicating the "one week is not a regime" caveat. Under all of it, gold and the long bond are rising together — the market's real worry isn't this month's CPI, it's trust in the fiscal path. Watch the 2027 dots, watch Powell's face, and don't confuse a priced-in hike with a safe one.
